News24xx.com - According to research, the voicing of a pause, such as “um...” or “er...” is done before saying a noun. This is because have to visualize the things they want to say in their mind before saying it. Study finds that visualizing the thing in one’s head will slow the quickness in saying the word.

As cited from Live Science, Wednesday, May 23rd 2018, the researchers from the Literature and Linguistic Department of University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, have studied about the pause in processing words that are unknown or difficult. The findings show that humans have comparative difficulty in arranging the words.

For their new research, they analyze thousands of speech recordings of 9 different languages from some areas like Europe, North America, Mexico, Siberia, Himalaya, Amazon rainforest, and Kalahari Desert. They listen to the rhythm of the words in the phrases.

The result shows that from all the languages that are studied, 60 percent the voicing of a pause happened before saying a noun than verb. They also found that the pause also happened even when the verb used was unknown or difficult to pronounce.

One of the reason why people tend to pause before saying nouns is because they are rarely used in speech. People will usually add noun to add information or to change it into another word.
