Rapper in Turkey was arrested because of his song lyrics

News24xx.com - Turkey's famous rapper, Ezhel was arrested by anti-drugs police in Istanbul. Ezhel was arrested on charges of 'encouraging drug use' due to the lyrics on his song.

The 28-year-old man was arrested on May 24th and taken to court after undergoing a medical examination at the hospital. The man whose real name is Ömer Sercan ?pekçio?lu was accused of encouraging drug use through the lyrics of his song.

Tag #FreeEzhel as a form of support for the artist was echoed on Twitter the night he was arrested. His name began to be known since the release of his debut album Müptezhel in 2017.

"I'm very sad that this is really happening in Turkey, Sercan is a very talented, he inspires a lot of people in a good way, let's support art and do not punish the person who created it" said one of the musicians who does not want to be named to the Independent.

Sercan manager, Riza Okcu also regrets the arrest. "Free Ezhel, writing a song is not a crime - the government should have caught the real criminals, and rap music tells the truth of what's happening on the streets" he said.

Turkish law threatens 'spirit for narcotic users' to be punished with a 5-10 year imprisonment, according to Bianet.
