News24xx.com - American scientists on the basis of data from more than five thousand people found that smoking people are prone to eating foods with a high energy density more than those who have finished with a bad habit or do not smoke at all. An article about this was published in the scientific journal "BMC Public Health".
Researchers from the United States came to the conclusion that smoking people consume
about 2.02 kilocalories per gram of food, while those who do not have a bad habit - 1.79.
Energy density (ED) of food is an indicator of the ratio of caloric content to the weight of the product. Specialists noted that ED is an important marker for determining the quality of the diet and the health risk factors associated with overweight. A diet with a low level of ED is called "a successful strategy to prevent weight gain through quitting smoking."
Scientists came to the conclusion that the organism of a smoker on a diet suffers more than a non-smoker. Harmful substances that enter the body of a smoker with caustic smoke, lead to poor health due to a reduction in daily calorie intake.
Researchers found that a heavy smoker needs more energy for life. Part of the energy is spent on counteracting toxins coming in with nicotine, the other part is required for food processing. However, even if a smoking person reduces smoking to a minimum during a diet, his state of health will not improve due to a lack of useful substances.
Scientists also found that smokers are more likely to experience a feeling of hunger, which increases with a lack of useful substances. Experts do not advise susceptible to a bad habit to go on a diet and at the same time to stop smoking. A bad habit causes a person to consume about 2.02 calories per gram of food, while a non-smoker needs only 1.79 calories. Thus, the diet in the first case will not bring any results.
It is reported that all volunteers, whose data were taken into account in the work of American scientists, participated in the National Health and Nutrition Surveys in 2013 - 2014.
Earlier, experts from the Japanese National Center for Global Health and Medicine, within the framework of an eight-year study involving more than 50,000 people, concluded that smoking is associated with an increased risk of hearing loss.
