Prepare yourself, in some area in Indonesia will experience the extreme cold weather at night

IllustrationIllustration - Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) gave a statement on their official website about the changes in air temperatures experienced by the public over the past few days because of the aphelion phenomenon

According BMKG, cold temperatures that even reached 12 degrees Celsius in Ruteng (NTT) is a phenomenon that usually occurs during the dry season of July to August. And also felt by people in other areas on the plateau.

The decrease in temperature and the water vapor content in the atmosphere recently  is quite small. It was visible from cloud that was insignificant in the last few days. Water vapor is a substance that is effective enough to store heat energy. With this low water vapor content, the radiation energy released by the Earth into space at night is not stored in the atmosphere. And the energy used to increase atmospheric temperature is also insignificant.

As a result, the air temperature in Indonesia at night during the dry season becomes lower than during the rainy season or transition season.

In its release, BMKG Meteorology Deputy Mulyono R. Prabowo mentioned in this July, the Australian territory is in the winter period. And the movement of the air masses from Australia to Indonesia, called the Cold Monsoon of Australia.

Another statement conveyed by Herizal, the Deputy of Climatology said the mountainous areas are on chance to experience surface air conditions less than freezing 0 degrees Celsius. "The phenomenon of nighttime cold and frost on the slopes of the mountains Dieng more due to meteorological conditions and the dry season is currently underway" he said.

Furthermore, it is indicated that the altitude area, especially in the mountains, is indicated that it will have a chance of experiencing surface air conditions less than 0 degrees Celsius freezing point, because the air molecules in mountainous areas are more tenuous than lowland so that it is rapidly cooling, more during sunny weather and not covered by cloud or rain.

Water vapor in the air will undergo condensation at night and then condense to cling to the ground, leaves or grass. The moisture attached to the leaves or grass will soon freeze due to the very cold temperature of the air, when it reaches minus or zero degrees.

In the release also called that in Indonesia, some places have been reported to experience this phenomenon, namely the Dieng plateau area, Mount Semeru and Jayawijaya mountains, Papua.

For the Aphelion phenomenon, it does not have a considerable effect on the temperature drop in Indonesia. Aphelion is the farthest point of the earth from the sun. This point occurs on Friday, July 6th 2018 at 23:48 pm. The opposite is perihelion, the closest distance to Earth with the Sun. These events occur routinely every year and are harmless to life on Earth.
