As reported by BBCIndonesia, Karnataka State Police Reserves Commander (KSRP) Bhaskar Rao, ordered its officials to lose weight. If not then it could be suspended even dismissed if careless in maintaining health.

Not without reason Bhaskar Rao took this the decision after more than 100 officers died within the last 18 months due to lifestyle-related illness.

The 'weight-bearing' apparatus will get help to change their lifestyle and diet.

KSRPs with 14,000 apparatus are often required to provide security in major events in addition to controlling riots or violent events.

Now a high-ranking KSRP officer has order to identify police officers who are overweight and get them to exercise regularly to help them lose weight.

"We started the process of monitoring the sugar index and other things since six months ago, the latest announcement of the threat of suspension and dismissal for careless parties" Rao told the BBC's Imran Qureshi.

It is common to see Indian police struggling with weight problems.

"In the past 18 months, 153 of our members died, of whom twenty-four died from road accidents and nine others committed suicide, and the rest died from lifestyle-related illnesses, such as heart failure and diabetes” added Rao.

He said the officers mostly ate foods containing rice, smoking, drinking alcohol and not exercising.

"The unit commander is ordered to regularly supervise the body mass index (BMI) of each police officer" Rao said.

KSRP also began giving swimming, yoga and other sports classes to the officers.

"Obviously, this exercise is done after a medical examination and the form is decided based on doctor's advice" he said.
