News24xx.com - The team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, and the University of California at Berkeley recently detected there are more than 100 quadrillion tons of diamonds stored in Earth's abdomen.

There are diamonds in the layers of craton rocks, namely stable continental plates. Craton is shaped like an upside mountain, located in the center of the plate tectonics, and can reach depths of about 322 kilometers. "This suggests that diamonds may not be a rare mineral, but rather quite prevalent on a geological scale" says Ulrich Faul, one of the researchers at MIT.

To find the existence of diamonds, the research team used sound waves or seismic data to find out what is beneath the surface of the earth. The same technology used to record earthquake activity. Sound waves travel at varying speeds, depending on the composition, temperature, and density of the rocks and minerals it passes.

By comparing the speed, the research team estimates what types of rocks are in the Earth's abdomen. In this case, they found that sound waves move faster as they pass through the palace roots - much faster than previously thought.

After conducting a number of experiments in the laboratory, it was discovered that such speeds were recorded when sound waves moved past rocks containing one to two percent of diamonds.

Reported by Business Insider, to estimate the total number of diamonds on earth, they assume craton roots are made from one to two percent diamonds, multiplied by the number of palaces scattered around the world. The number obtained is 10 quadrillion tons of diamonds.
