India government threatens to penalize WhatsApp due to the massive circulation of fake news on its platform

News24xx.com - India threatened to punish Whatsapp after the widespread of hoax news on the messaging platform and caused the deaths of residents as a result of false rumors.

In the latest case, 25 people were detained in India on Sunday after 2,000 mobs killed 27-ayear-old man for unfounded charges as kidnappers. This deadly incident is the umpteenth time of deadly incident that triggered by social media in India.

Therefore, the Indian government threatens Whatsapp with legal action if it cannot find a solution. Quoted from Business Insider, the Indian government openly warns Whatsapp that perhaps they will take action on the case."The vast circulation of irresponsible messages at WhastApp has not been adequately addressed to them" the Indian Ministry of Information Technology said.

They also say that when rumors and hoaxes are spread by criminals, the media used to carry out this propaganda cannot escape from the responsibility. "If Whatsapp is only as a media, they can be treated as accomplices and face a legal action" they added.

WhatsApp is currently under intense scrutiny over the last few months due to the hoax news spread on its platform. According to the Guardian, there are at least 20 cases of victims being tortured by the masses for the fake allegations.
