During this time the world's surfing famous spots are around Bali, Hawaii, Australia, and California. But now it's time the surfer should glance at India. Having a coastline of more than 7,000 kilometers, it is not surprising that India is blessed with waves of varying sizes.

When most of the infrastructure that supports surfing activities in India is still inadequate, Mantra Surf Club is already sticking its milestone. It is said that this is the first surf club in India. Being in a remote part of southwestern Karnataka, the founders of Mantra Surf Club have seen the potential and opportunities of this extreme sport since 10 years ago.

"India will evolve into a special place to surf" Karnataka's surf instructor and ambassador Rammohan Parapanje said. "Today we can enjoy a lonely beach and feel like it has its own waves, but more than that, the distinctive cultural element here becomes a value that is not shared elsewhere."

Parapanje says most Indians avoid activities at sea due to cultural issues. But that did not dampen Paranjape's intention to open a surf club.

"In 2007, the term surfing may not be heard in India, but since the Mantra is operating, thousands of people are interested in learning to surf, from famous cricket athletes to Bollywood stars" said one of the men who entered the first generation of surfing in India.
