News24xx.com - Preventing flocks of birds from obstructing flight, CalTech develops autonomous drones to keep flocks of birds from flying around the airport. At present, many airports use manually driven drones. Not only expensive, of course, a trained pilot is needed to control this drone.

Soon-Jo Chung, an engineer from Caltech, was interested to make this drone after studying historical events that were remembered by the whole world, like the emergency landing of US Airways 1549 on Hudson River in 2009. This aircraft was fallen due to birds.

"I think if the incident happens again, it is not certain that other aircraft will have luck like US Airways. Therefore, I began to try to protect the air space from the flocks by utilizing my capabilities in robotics and autonomous technology," Chung said in Techcrunch, on Thursday, August 9th 2018.

This drone will work to predict the behavior of birds. Chung realized this was not easy. Therefore, he said that the drone must be in the right position. If the drone is too far away, the drone will not affect the flock, but if the drone is too close, drone will have the risk of disrupting the flocks of birds and making them uncontrollable.

The research team studied the model of how a group of animals move and influence each other, and how they describe how birds move when responding to threats. With the study carried out, the flight path of the drone is obtained which will cause the birds to fly in the desired direction without panic and dispersion.
