News24xx.com - The gang-rape of a 35-year-old woman in a moving car in Gurgaon on Monday night jolted the nation. The woman was raped by three men who abducted her from outside her house in Sohna area while she was out for a walk.

They took turns to rape her while the car moved around for eight hours, and finally dumped her at a dark spot in Greater Noida before escaping.

The case bears an eerie resemblance to the horrific December 2012 gang-rape case of a medical student in a bus.

Not long before that, on May 29, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped by three men after they threw her nine-month-old daughter off an auto-rickshaw, causing her death, in Gurgaon.

The woman was going to her parents’ place after a fight with her husband when she decided to take an auto in which three men were already sitting. The men started harassing her as soon as she sat in the vehicle.

Her baby daughter started crying, and soon they threw her out. The child died of injuries and the woman was raped on a deserted road near the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway.

Last month, the body of a 23-year-old who was gang-raped before being murdered, was found in Rohtak. In yet another incident, a 26-year-old was gang-raped in a moving car in Gurgaon and abandoned in a semi-conscious state near her house.

Women’s safety and violence against women has always been a predominant issue in India.

The gruesome cases of sexual assault in north India in the last few years, especially in the Delhi-NCR region, have become a major cause of concern, considering the fact that a huge chunk of workforce comprising young women travel each day to this part risking their safety every day.

Gurgaon has an extremely dark side for the safety of women. Women who travel to Gurugram for work or live in the city, face an extremely hard time quite often.

"Living in Delhi has its own pros and cons, but travelling daily to work in Gurgaon is the worst. Being a journalist, my work requires me to be available at odd hours. And that is what I fear the most. This one time, while I was driving from Cyber hub back to South Delhi, Lajpat Nagar at 10:30pm. I saw a car following me. I quickly got on to the highway but the man maneuvered swiftly according to my lanes. When my car got stuck in traffic and I looked at him, he was dangling his bit shamelessly staring at me. I was scared he may follow me up till my house but I guess his work was done mid-way. I have been working in Gurgaon for almost 3 years now and opted a shift that allows me to reach my house by 8. The city has only taught me how to stop living my life post 7:30pm."– Saloni Singh, 29, Journalist.
