News24xx.com - Roaches are one of the insects that are often considered disgusted by most people. However, can these animals also spread diseases such as flies, mosquitoes or fleas?

According to an extensive review of public health risks from all types of pests carried out by World Health Organization (WHO), the health risks evident from cockroach infestations appear to be dominated by feces, food contamination and allergic asthma rather than direct transmission.

"This is because many studies reveal that cockroaches eat human waste and spread or produce pathogens, they have a strong secondary role in the spread of the disease" said C. Claiborne Ray, author of The New York Times Book of Science Questions & Answers.

But in its 2008 review, WHO concluded that: "definitive evidence that cockroaches are factors (spread of infectious diseases) for human disease is still lacking."

Indeed there is a list of bacteria, fungi, and various viruses that can be carried by cockroaches. Including amoeba parasites that can cause dysentery, other parasites that cause giardiasis (infection in the small intestine) and viruses that cause polio.

Beyond that, asthma caused by allergic of cockroaches itself has become a public health concern. For example, in a 2005 study it was revealed that children living in slums in the United States were at greater risk of developing asthma-related diseases from cockroach allergy than other animals.

" WHO study also found that improper use of insecticides, especially when using too much aerosol and liquid sprayers, could potentially cause problematic exposure to humans" Ray said.
