News24xx.com - A recent study in the journal Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism says exposure to a substance called triclosan might increase the risk of getting osteoporosis in women. We usually find this substance in bath soap products and antiseptic liquids.

Researcher Yingjun Li from Hangzhou Medical College looked at data from 1,848 women in the United States (US). The results found women with high levels of triclosan in their urine are at risk of osteoporosis 2.5 times greater than women with low levels of triclosan in their urine. Although how the exact mechanism of triclosan can caused osteoporosis is still unknown, several previous studies have seen clues to the possibility that triclosan interferes with the production of reproductive hormones.

In women, reduced production of reproductive hormones such as estrogen has long been known to slow the formation of new tissue in the bone. That's why menopausal women are often called cautious about the increased risk of osteoporosis. "Exposure to triclosan can be a risk factor for lower bone mineral density and osteoporosis" Li was quoted as saying by Reuters on Thursday, June 27th 2019.

Triclosan itself is a compound that is often added to cleaning products as an antibacterial agent. In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that the use of triclosan is only useful in toothpaste to treat gingivitis (gum disease) and does not provide health benefits to bath soap or hand sanitizer antiseptic.
