News24xx.com -  A young footballer died under the wheels of an express train just 12 hours after breaking up with his girlfriend over texts he found on her phone.

Jacob Standbridge, 21, stepped in front of the high-speed service after messaging his mother Karen saying, "I love you mum so much. Thank you for everything you have done for me. I’m so sorry."

The sports teacher suffered multiple injuries and died at Sandbach railway station shortly after 6.30am on October 13 last year.

An inquest into his death heard he had been planning to propose to girlfriend Ciera during a trip to New York. But the relationship had become strained after he started using steroids.

The pair had split up the previous evening after he became upset about text messages he found on her phone.

Jacob played in midfield for the Stoke City Academy after studying a BTEC in sports management was offered a job providing sports training programs for local schools.

The inquest heard he was ‘extremely ambitious and driven but also loving and extremely proud of what he achieved’. His mother said: "Sometime in January 2016 Jacob met Ciera, and she was his first love and became part of the family. "

But it seemed to be in the last seven to eight weeks of his life that things with Ciera became rocky, and this coincided with the period he started to use steroid injections.
