News24xx.com - The Riau Center for Natural Resources Conservation (BBKSDA) team tried to save a wild Sumatran elephant that was injured by a snare in Lubuk Umbut Village, Mandau River District, Siak Regency.

Riau BBKSDA PR, Dian Indriati, said that she found a report from the public regarding a calf affected by snares in the area on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 yesterday.

"Without waiting for time, we from BBKSDA Riau through the Rescue Team, immediately rushed to the scene," he said.

He told, the incident began with residents who saw the Sumatran elephant appearing alone in the river, and the group had left it.

After the team arrived at the scene, the animal named latin elephans maximus sumatranus turned out to be in a concession owned by PT Arara Abadi (AA), Melibur District.

"The community really helped us oversee the position of these animals, so that they are always monitored so we can evacuate them," he said.

Then the team immediately released the strong nylon meshes to tie the male male elephant. "After checking, it is estimated that the calf's age is around 1 year," he said.

After removing the nylon rope that snared him, the elephant was seen weakening, so the Riau BBKSDA team decided to take emergency medical measures at the location.

It is planned that the calf will be evacuated from that location. The evacuation process also involved two benign Sumatran elephants.

"Currently, the evacuation effort is still being carried out by escorting two tame elephants named Bankin and Indah," he concluded.
