News24xx.com - French President Emmanuel Macron warned his citizens not to "give a bad stamp" on Muslims or easily link Islam to terrorism.

This statement was made after a French woman sued a right-wing politician who criticized her for wearing hijab in public places.

"We must stand together with fellow citizens," Macron said at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday (16 Oct).

There are five million Muslim residents in France and this is the largest Muslim minority in Western Europe.

The wearing of hijab is prohibited in schools, government offices and public buildings in France.

France is officially a secular state and the use of body armor has been a source of controversy in recent years.

Last week, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab accompanied her son who was on a study tour to the local parliament in Bourgogne-Franche-Comte in eastern France.

He received verbal abuse from MPs' courtrooms.

The event also triggered street demonstrations and revived national debate about the use of the hijab in France.

Currently in France there is no prohibition to wear the hijab while doing a school tour study.

On Wednesday, President Macron felt the need to respond by calling for a better understanding of Islam in France. He also condemned what he called the "shortcut" that links Islam with terrorism.
