News24xx.com - The massive and protracted demonstration in Hong Kong was triggered by this person. This Hong Kong man used to kill his girlfriend who is also a Hong Konger. The murder occurred in Taiwan. Now he has agreed to return to Taiwan to undergo trial.

Reported by AFP on Saturday (19 October 2019), the man's name is Chan Tong-kai. Information about Chan Tong-kai's willingness to attend court in Taiwan was obtained from his pastor.

Chan Tong-kai is 20 years old. He has been sought by the Taiwanese for killing his girlfriend who was pregnant. The murder took place while on vacation in February 2018.

After the murder, the man then returned to Hong Kong. Taiwan police who are part of the People's Republic of China certainly cannot chase him, because there is no extradition treaty between Hong Kong and Taiwan.

This case sparked a controversial Hong Kong government proposal. Hong Kong government, then, rolled out an extradition law that would allow Hong Kong to hand over alleged perpetrators of crimes to other regions, including to the authoritarian PRC region.

Then a series of protests broke out in Hong Kong against the bill. The demonstrations continue to roll for democracy and police accountability.

Now, Chan Tong-kai who triggered the series of riots is willing to go to Taiwan to be sued. Chan is now detained in Hong Kong after he was charged with stealing his ill-fated boyfriend's property, his name is Poon Shark-wing.

He will be released from Hong Kong to Taiwan next week. Anglican priest Peter Koon regularly visits Chan in a Hong Kong prison. He said, Chan was willing to surrender to Taiwanese authorities.

"I believe he will keep his promise," Koon told AFP.

"He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and he apologized profusely for having stirred up trouble in Hong Kong," Koon said.

Taiwan applies the death penalty for murderers. But Koon said Chan is unlikely to get a death sentence if he voluntarily surrenders.
