News24xx.com - For pork lovers who enjoy tasty meat sandwiches or pork cutlet from now on you must take note and be extra careful where you buy meat. As you may know now, a recent outbreak of African Swine Fever on pork products made in China has triggered a ban on their sales in Malaysia.

According to reports, Sarawak has now imposed a temporary ban on all pork products imported from countries affected by the recent African Pork Fever outbreak including those made from China. The ban was issued after the Veterinary Public Health Laboratory in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi detected a virus in pork products sold in Sarawak.

The test, carried out on 17 canned meat products. The test results showed that one of the meat tested positive contained DNA of African Pig Fever. Each test is carried out using Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (q-PCR) last Friday (25 October 2019).

The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries (MoA) and related agencies will conduct inspections to ensure that products from affected countries are not illegally imported or smuggled into the country.

"Although Malaysia is still considered ASF-free, the ministry takes the findings seriously and warns the public against buying pork products from risky countries.

"Legal action will be taken against those caught carrying products illegally," the ministry said in a statement.

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious hemorrhagic viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs, and can cause up to 100% death in infected pigs within two to ten days.
