News24xx.com - An Iranian beauty queen wanted by Tehran on criminal charges has been granted political asylum in the Philippines.

Bahareh Zare Bahari, who has lived in the Philippines since 2014, was barred from entering Southeast Asian countries on October 17 when she was about to return from Dubai.

Tehran wants to punish it for opposing Iran's theocratic regime. Bahari then sought refugee status, she hid in a room at Manila's international airport and used social media to garner support from the international community - including a request to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

"They will kill me," Bahari said through the Telegraph last month, referring to the Iranian government.

Deputy Justice Minister of the Philippines Markk Perete said that Bahari had been granted political asylum.

Ahead of the asylum decision, the rights group Amnesty International urged the Philippine government not to deport Bahari, as a form of vocal criticism of the Iranian government and to support the public who oppose the use of the headscarf.

The beauty queen said she had been an Iranian target since she showed support for the exiled Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Iranian Shah who was ousted in the 1979 Islamic revolution in the country.
