News24xx.com - Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Mikhail Mishustin, 53, chairman of the Russian Federal Tax Service for the position of Russian prime minister after Dmitry Medvedev resigned on Wednesday (16 January). A tax technocrat who was previously not widely known will now lead the Russian government.

Born in Moscow in 1966, Mikhail Vladimirovich Mishustin is not known as a well-known politician in Russia and his career tends to be a technocratic figure, until now. He has worked in the tax sector since 1998 and has led the Federal Tax Service since 2010.

In 2008, he also served as head of the Russian investment company UFG, which at the time collaborated with Deutsche Bank of Germany.

Although his career focused on taxes, Mishustin initially received an education as an engineer. He graduated from the STANKIN Institute of Mechanical Instruments in Moscow in 1989. According to the official biography, he has a PhD in economics.

He also had an assignment as an IT expert in the 1990s at the International Computer Club, which, according to Russian news agency TASS, aims to attract "sophisticated western information technology to Russia."

Mishustin is similar to his predecessor Medvedev in embracing technology and has been widely praised for digitizing the Russian tax system. He succeeded in reducing tax avoidance and driving many small informal businesses into the formal economy.

Just last year, Mishutin told the Kommersant newspaper that Russia needed to embrace artificial intelligence and digital technology, saying "if we don't understand how the world is developing and what the rules are, if we insist that our country is part of the old order, this new world will make us victims.
