Initially, Defense Minister Mark Esper assessed that an evacuation was not needed for the crew because no one was seriously ill. They have only quarantined onboard the fighter jets.

However, Navy Minister Thomas Modly said more than 1,000 US troops had been evacuated from USS Theodore Roosevelt and that number would increase to 2,700 in a few days, and more.

However, ship operations must continue to run by maintaining about 1,000 crew.
