News24xx.com -  Since May, a ban on the sale of menthol cigarettes has been introduced in the UK and EU countries.

The law itself prohibits all cigarettes with a characteristic taste, but since most flavored cigarettes on the market are menthol, the ban was called that way.

In addition to cigarettes with different flavors, filters, paper, and capsules containing various flavors will also be lost in stores. Not only that, but thin cigarettes will also not be available in the UK. Officials expect that such a measure will help reduce the number of young smokers.

Menthol was first added to cigarette filters in the 1920s. Manufacturers claimed that such cigarettes were safer for smokers, and advertised their products around a feeling of freshness from smoking.

Numerous surveys say that young people are often convinced that menthol cigarettes are less dangerous. In fact, cigarettes with different tastes do not differ from ordinary cigarettes in their effect on the body and still contribute to the development of cancer and heart and vascular diseases.

Menthol has a cooling effect and can reduce the cough and throat discomfort that many smokers experience. Doctors believe that this is why young people believe in less harm to menthol cigarettes.

In addition, if a person first tries to smoke and chooses flavored cigarettes, he is much more likely to become addicted to nicotine than those who try cigarettes without flavors.

Moreover, smokers of menthol cigarettes on average smoke more than others and less often want to quit.

The problem is that quitting smoking menthol cigarettes is more difficult for many.

An American research company conducted a survey among people who would like to quit smoking: among menthol cigarette lovers, 69% of those surveyed were not able to give up the habit, while among smokers without cigarettes, such 54%.

In Britain, the proportion of flavored cigarettes has been growing all the time in recent years. In 2010, menthol cigarettes accounted for 7% of the market, and in 2013 - already 8.5%. Although formally a law banning the sale of flavored cigarettes was adopted before Brexit in 2016.

On October 1, 2017, Canada completely banned the sale of menthol cigarettes. The experts

Experts concluded that the ban led to the fact that after a year a large number of people gave up smoking altogether or began to make active attempts to quit.

Since May 20, the Spanish government has equated the sale of menthol cigarettes with a serious crime - violators face a fine of up to 10 thousand euros.  (DEV/MSH)
