News24xx.com - It is common knowledge that exercise is not only good for physical health, but also mental health. That said, by moving the body, one's mental health will increase quickly. In addition, exercise also clarifies the power of thought and directly reduces mind tension, aka stress.

However, a recent study concludes a different matter. The study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry Journal, states that exercise risks lowering mental health. Researchers from Yale University and University of Oxford analyzed data from 1.2 million adults in United States. Data includes physical health, mental health, and behavior.

Participants were asked about their condition when mentally deteriorated due to stress, depression, or other emotional problems. In addition, the researchers also checked the exercise habits of participants.

The result, the researchers concluded that exercise 3-5 times a week for 45 minutes is the best portion to achieve a healthy mental condition. However, more than that, a person will experience deteriorating mental health for 3-4 days a month.

"Exercise is associated with worse mental health. This can happen to everyone regardless of age, race, occupation, etc. Interestingly, specific exercise portions such as duration and frequency play an important role in that" said the assistant professor. Yale University psychiatry, Adam Chekroud, launched The Independent.

This study recommends the need for attention to the frequency and duration of exercise. Exercise for more than 90 minutes, Chekroud said, has the potential to reduce a person's mental health.
