In the video, which was posted online Saturday by a female high-speed train passenger who was disturbed by what she saw, the man who was the girl’s father is seen fondling the little girl, lifting up her shirt, grabbing her buttocks, and trying to kiss her on the lips while holding her in his lap.
The little girl looks reluctant and cries out for help to her mother and grandmother, but they neither take any notice.
The footage sparked shock and anger online, leading to railway police in Nanchang, Jiangxi province launching an investigation and a hunt for the man.
On Wednesday night, police announced the conclusion of their investigation, saying that they had determined that the 30-year-old man surnamed Zhou was indeed the 5-year-old girl’s father and that his behavior did not constitute molestation.
However, that decision has only ignited further internet outrage. “Are you saying that a father cannot molest his daughter?” asked one netizen. “If this is the kind of thing he does in public, just imagine what goes on behind closed doors,” wrote another.
