El Chapo is a former leader of the Sinaloa cartel, which operates in the State of Sinaloa, Mexico. The US government declared that syndicate as one of the strongest in the world of drugs. He was nicknamed as such because of his short stature, which is only 1.67 meters. He was extradited to the US from Mexico on January 19, 2017, after escaping from prison twice. He had fled in 2016 when his hideout was raided by Mexican authorities.

On the run, El Chapo gave an exclusive interview with actor Sean Penn for Rolling Stone magazine. He claimed to supply the most heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine from anyone in the world. According to the US Attorney General's Office, El Chapo is directly involved in sending tons of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine through the US border. If proven guilty, he will be imprisoned for life.
