Stephen Hillenburg: The creator of Sponge Bob died of neurological diseases

News24xx.com -  The creator of SpongeBob Square Pants animated character, Stephen Hillenburg died at the age of 57 years.

This news was confirmed by Nickelodeon, who has been broadcasting the cartoon series since 1999.

In an official statement, the broadcasting company called the cause of the death of Hillenburg a neurological disease Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or better known as the abbreviation ALS.

Hillenburg is known to have diagnosed the disease in March 2017.

"We are sad to share the news of the death of Stephen Hillenburg, creator of Sponge Bob SquarePants," Nickelodeon said.

"Today we have a moment of silence to honor his life and work."

The company added, "Steve instilled 'SpongeBob SquarePants' with humor and innocence that brings happiness to generations of children and families everywhere."

"The original characters and the world of Bikini Bottom will be a reminder of the value of optimism, friendship, and the power of unlimited imagination."

Along with the news of Hillenburg's death, SpongeBob fans uploaded thanks to the deceased for his work "enriching life" and "creating laughter for many years to come".

In addition to creating characters in SpongeBob's series, Hillenburg also directed The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie which was released in 2004.

The SpongeBob SquarePants series has been aired in more than 200 episodes and featured on the Broadway stage with original music from David Bowie, John Legend, and Cyndi Lauper.

The Broadway version of SpongeBob's appearance won the Tony Award trophy earlier this year.

The late Hillenburg left his wife whom he married for 20 years, Karen Hillenburg. Both are blessed with a son named Clay.
