News24xx.com - The handwritten letter of the founder of modern physics Albert Eintein known as "God's Letter" has been sold at Christie's New York auction house for almost USD 2.9 million.

"The word of God to me means the disclosure and product of human weakness," read Einstein's hand in a letter he wrote in 1954, one year before he died.

The letter was actually a response from the book of Jewish German philosopher Eric Gutkind, entitled "Choose Life: The Gospel's call to rebel." Peter Klarnet from Christie's auction house in New York said the letter reflected Einstein's concept of God.

Diana Kormos-Buchwald, director of the Einstein Document Project who translated and published the letters of the physicist said Einstein was not against religion because he believed religion played a role as a function of ethics.

The one-half A4 paper letter is not expected to be a sales record.

Einstein's letter to the typewriter for US President Franklin Roosevelt, contained a warning about the possibility of nuclear research by Germany, and sold in New York in 2002 for USD 2 million. Handwritten letters written in German caused concern when first auctioned in 2008.

The letter sold around USD 404,000 in London and the buyer was not mentioned.

In the letter Einstein began by praising Gutkind because in his book he wrote, an effort towards improvement related to existence but later wrote about Gutkind's beliefs. Einstein was also critical of his Jewish identity, specifically questioning the claim that Jews were "chosen people".
