News24xx.com - Working five days a week seems too heavy for those over 40 years old. Research shows that people who are 40 years old should work no more than three days a week. The study, published at the Melbourne Institute Worker Paper, shows that people who were over 40 years old were most productive when they worked three days or less a week.

This result was obtained after researchers followed more than 3,000 men and 3,500 women. The researcher asks participants to complete cognitive or thinking tests including reading text backwards, reading words aloud, and matching numbers and letters under time pressure. The researcher then analyzes the work habits, memories, and abstract reasoning of the participants.

As a result, participants' cognitive abilities increased as researchers increased working hours by up to 25 hours. However, after 25 hours, researchers found that cognitive performance began to decline in both men and women. When you have reached 55 hours of work for a week, the results of cognitive abilities are even worse than those who do not work or have retired.

"The level of intellectual stimulation depends on working hours. Work can be a double-edged sword, because it can stimulate brain activity, but at the same time long working hours can cause fatigue and stress, which can potentially damage cognitive function" researcher Colin McKenzie told the Times, quoted from Travel and Leisure.

For his research, McKenzie concluded, working hours are important for maintaining cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly adults. He also said, working part time can be more effective in maintaining cognitive abilities.
