Quoting from Reuters, a church official who declined to be named said more than 100 people has been detained. Church members claimed to not be able to contact Father Wang Yi, church founder, or his wife. They also claimed a group in WeChat instant messaging those members often use has been blocked by government.

Through a video uploaded by activists in China, it was seen a group of plainclothes police drove people away while going to worship. In the recording, a policeman caught on camera said he would take a man to the city public security bureau to be investigated further.

Both the Chengdu government and the national level public ministry are still reluctant to comment on the case. Although basically the Chinese constitution guarantees religious freedom, the government under President Xi Jinping tightened restrictions on religion which were considered contrary to the authority of the Communist Party.

Now, Chinese law requires all places of worship to register and be subject to government oversight. But some churches refused to register for various reasons, including the Early Rain Covenant Church.
