"In my research, clay particles do not react as expected. Clay material attracts, absorbs, and ensures fat passes through the digestive system without being processed first" said Tahmnee Dening, a PhD candidate from the University of South Australia quoted by the Daily Mail.

This result was found accidentally by Dening. Dening was looking for ingredients that could help the body absorb antipsychotic drugs. According to him, the character of clay has the potential to be developed into a cure for obesity. Dening then continued his research on mice that received three weight-loss treatments. Mice previously had a high-fat diet.

The treatment is a drug for weight loss, orlistat, and clay constituent material called montmorillonite. As a result, mice that received montmorillonite had a slower rate of weight gain than the other two treatments. Montmorillonite has been proven to help reduce the rate of weight gain in mice.

Dening said his team had modified the montmorillonite eaten by mice. Montmorillonite is formed more densely so that it can absorb more fat in the body of the mice. According to Dening, his team will now continue the research by combining montmorillonite and orlistat treatments. Orlistat drugs work by blocking the body's digestive system from processing fat.
