The popular game Fortnite, becoming the place for criminal to do money laundering, how?

News24xx.com - Fortnite's popularity does not seem to only benefit its developer, Epic Games. Criminals also use this battle royale game to money laundering. Fortnite itself is free to download and play, but this game relies on in-game currencies called V-Bucks to buy items such as skins or costumes and weapons. This currency also makes Fortnite popular with criminals.

The British publication, The Independent, who conducted this research with cyber security companies, Sixgill explained how these criminals worked. First, they used the stolen credit card details to buy V-Bucks from the official Fortnite store. V-Bucks are then sold at lower prices to players. With this, the money trail was successfully cleared.

"Criminals commited credit card fraud and get money in and out of the Fortnite system with relative impunity," said Senior Intelligence Analyst Sixgill, Benjamin Preminger, as quoted by The Independent, Wednesday, January 16th 2019.

The discounted V-Bucks are sold in large quantities through the dark web. Criminals also sell small amounts by placing advertisements on social media such as Instagram and Twitter. Even more difficult, criminals who sell these coins receive payments through bitcoin and bitcoin cash, making it more difficult to be tracked the police.
