The intensity of asteroids rain down on Earth has tripled since the dinosaur's age

News24xx.com - Recent research shows that the intensity of asteroids that hit Earth has tripled since dinosaurs roamed on the Blue Planet. Furthermore, the researchers said that asteroid attacks on the Earth and the Moon grew dramatically in the last 290 years.

Before that time period, the planet only suffered asteroid collisions once in every 3 million years. After that, the intensity increases to almost 1 million years. This number is obtained based on the number of collisions that leave the mark or we know as the crater with the diameter at least 10 km wide.

These findings also show that dinosaurs may have been unlucky because they began to evolve since 240 million years ago, shortly after the possibility of Earth was hit by asteroids that resulted an extinction of dinosaur species.

Research shows that of the 95 asteroid rains that caused large craters on the Moon's surface that occurred in the span of billions of years, 50 of them occurred in the last 290 million years.

In a report published in the journal Science, the researchers explained that the Earth and the Moon were attacked by asteroids with almost the same frequency. The difference is that the craters that appear as impacts tend to disappear on Earth due to erosion and shifting of continental plates. Whereas in the Geologically inactive Moon, the crater is easier to investigate.

They used images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Siter to study dust and rocks around the craters on the Moon. From there, scientists can estimate when the crater was formed, which was quoted from The Guardian, on Saturday, January 19th 2019.
