News24xx.com - A woman in the UK claimed that she had undergone a fetal repair surgery after finding her baby diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect that affected her spine. Quoted from the BBC, doctors gave Bethan Simpson (26) three choices: continuing her pregnancy, stopping her pregnancy or doing a fetal surgery, which is to operate her before she was born. She chose the third, making her as the the fourth woman in Britain who have voted for that option.

The Mayo Clinic site says that spina bifida occurs when the spine and spinal cord are not properly formed and will later affect the baby's brain and spinal cord and surrounding tissue. In the process, the doctor opens the Bethan uterus to reveal the baby's buttocks, then they 'sew' a small gap between the lower back bone and rearrange the position of the nerve.

The operation that lasted four hours ended in success. "The surgery is successful. The lesions are small. I felt weak and painful as long as the baby fine it's all ok" Bethan wrote on her Facebook. Dominic Thompson, the neurosurgeon who led the operation explained that the procedure was not to cure but looking at previous trials had indicated that with earlier surgery the baby could be better.
