News24xx.com - In an Australian prison, the prisoner had to give birth in a locked cell without the help of specialists. About that reports the «ABC» portal.

The incident occurred last spring in the women's prison of Bandiap in the state of Western Australia. The woman went to jail in the last stage of pregnancy for violating the conditions of release on bail.

On the evening of March 11, her labor pains began. At about 5.30pm she reported this to a prison officer. In the medical unit she was given paracetamol and sent back to the cell. As it turned out later, the nurses were not informed of complaints of labor. At 6:30 pm, the prisoner again asked for help, but this time she was ignored.

An hour and five minutes later, the nurses arrived at the cell, but they couldn’t get inside, because the employee with the keys wasn’t there. They had to talk to the mother through the door. At 19:40 a woman gave birth in a locked cell. Childbirth was uneventful. She was taken to the hospital on the same day.

After this incident, the Australian Department of Justice opened an investigation. In the report, what happened is called “humiliating and extremely dangerous”.

According to the author, the reasons for the incident were inadequate conditions of detention of the prisoner at the last stage of pregnancy, poor communication, slow response of staff and shortcomings in reporting.
