News24xx.com - In October, Joanna Smith (58) realized that cancer in her mouth turned out to be malignant cancer. The doctor gave her the choice, between removing part of her tongue or giving up to the cancer and possibly not being able to meet with Christmas. "The doctor called me lucky if I could live for another six to eight months. Enough to shock me" she said, quoted by Fox News.

She finally chose to operate her tongue, and the surgeons took most of her tongue, glands in her neck and several teeth in a total of three surgeries for 10 hours. She was also given a new 'tongue' made from veins and pieces of her arm.

"My doctors were amazing. They always said I would be able to get a new tongue. There were 29 people involved on me surgery. When I woke up, I was a bit disorientated. But I could immediately spoke with my mouth" she continued.

Now Joanna is cancer free even though she must avoid foods that are too hot to avoid burning her new tongue, and slowly transition to solid food. Joanna hopes the doctor can give her new teeth too. "I have to think before eating and I have to wash my mouth. I can't eat and use my mouth as usual. I had to think about talking. I have to make sure I don't bite my tongue because I can't feel it" said Joanna.
