Working on the weekend could lead you to get depression, study found

News24xx.com - Working on weekends may be okay, but not too often. If too often, bear the consequences. Research shows that people who work on weekends are more prone to mental health problems. Recent research in the UK shows women and men who work on weekends is more likely to experience depression.

The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, analyzed survey data from 11,215 men and 12,188 women who worked in the UK in 2010-2012. Nearly half of the women work less than 35 hours per week, while the majority of men work longer hours. Half of the female participants work at least on several weekends.

The number of men who work on weekends is more, reaching two-thirds.The result, researchers found that women who work on weekends have more symptoms of depression than women who only work on weekdays. In men they also have more symptoms of depression when working on weekends and also do not like their working conditions.

Other findings, men who work fewer than 35 hours have more symptoms of depression than those who work 35-40 hours each week. In women, the symptoms of depression are even greater in those who work at least 55 hours a week.

"Our results show gender differences in the relationship between irregular working hours and depressive symptoms" said study leader Gillian Weston of University College Lo, quoted by Reuters.
