News24xx.com - Sudan's armed forces staged a coup against the leadership of President Omar al-Bashir, who has been in power since 1989 on Thursday, April 11th 2019 yesterday. They then took over the civilian government by forming a Military Council led by the Minister of Defense, General Awad Mohammed Ibn Auf.

As reported by the Associated Press, on Friday, April 12th 209, Ibn Auf was immediately sworn to lead the Military Council a few hours after the coup took place. His inauguration was broadcast by the state television station. The Chief of Staff of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Kamal Abdel-Marouf al-Mahi, is appointed Deputy Head of the Military Council.

Most likely Ibn Ouf will be the current head of state of Sudan. The military said they would run the government for two years, before transferring it to civilians. However, the attitude of the military which claimed the government actually ignited the anger of civilian politicians and activists.

Because, they have been demanding that Bashir, who is considered as a dictator to step down and to be replaced by a democratic government. The coup was carried out after a wave of demonstrations demanded Bashir to resign more aggressively since last week. This has been done since December 2018.
