News24xx.com -  Finally, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah from Brunei returned a honorary law degree awarded from Oxford University of England, following criticism from a number of parties regarding his application of the death penalty to LGBT people.

Almost 120,000 people signed the online petition in April 2019, and asked the Oxford University to revoke a law degree that awarded to Sultan Bolkiah since 1993.

The petition was filed after the Brunei king planned to impose extreme interpretations of sharia law on April 3 2019, by punishing the perpetrators of sodomy, adultery and rape. The form of punishment is being to stoned until death.

In an effort to reduce various condemnations, Sultan Bolkiah announced earlier this month, that the death penalty would not be applied.

Responding to that petition, the Oxford University said it was reviewing and writing to Sultan Bolkiah on April 26, and "asking for his views" no later than June 7, 2019.

But, a statement said that Sultan Bolkiah had answered the letter with the decision to return the honorary title on May 6th.

Meanwhile, Oxford University said it had reviewed the decision taken in 1993.

As information, the proposal to impose the death penalty in Brunei, was criticized by the United Nations and encouraged many celebrities and human rights groups to boycott of Sultan Bolkiah's hotels, such as Dorchester in London and Beverley Hills Hotels in Los Angeles.
