News24xx.com -  An innocent baby boy has died after allegedly being thrown into a river in Greater Manchester.

Police have described the incident as incredibly tragic as they confirmed a 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

He remains in custody for questioning tonight and was reportedly detained at a nearby pub, which has since been closed.

Officers were called to the River Irwell in Radcliffe just before 4.25pm earlier today to reports of a child in the water.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, along with the police helicopter.

The baby boy – believed to be almost 12-months old – was retrieved and taken to hospital.

But he died a short time later, despite the best efforts of paramedics and specialist doctors.

A murder investigation has now been launched and detectives are urging any witnesses to get in touch as a "matter of urgency".
