Gigantic! a Volcano Erupts in New Zealand; Five Tourists Were Killed, Dozens of Tourists Injured and Have not Been Found

As many as five people have been killed and dozens more injured and still missing due to the volcano disaster off the coast of New Zealand. The disaster occurred precisely when tourists climbed the mountain.

The disaster occurred on Whakaari or also known as White Island, which is located 29 miles (48km) off the North Island of New Zealand. The volcano erupted around 2.11pm local time on Monday. A cloud of smoke and flakes of 12,000 feet (3,657 m) soared into the sky.

A group of tourists were seen inside the crater of the mountain some time before a big explosion occurred. In addition, some are on ships close to the island. They were forced to run for their safety, because thick black smoke billowed toward them.

It is estimated that around 50 people were on the island at the time of the eruption. Eighteen survivors have been evacuated. They suffered injuries including severe burns. Five people were reported killed, so an estimated 27 more are still missing.

Authorities struggle to reach the island to check on the situation. In fact, experts warn there is a risk of further eruptions.

Deputy National Operations Commander, John Tims, said the death toll was expected to increase once the island search was conducted.

The majority of tourists involved are believed to have come from the Ovation of the Seas cruiser which departed from Sydney last Wednesday with 4,579 passengers and 1,595 crew for a 12-day trip.

According to 9News, 24 Australians were believed to have been on the island at the time of the incident.
