Mariana Mendes, from Juiz de Fora, Brazil believes her birthmark makes her unique and will never be ashamed of it because it helps her to stand out from everyone else.

 

Since she was born, she already has a black mark in the center of her face, in the area of her nose, right eye to her right cheek. This birthmark is called congenital melanocytic nevus, in which the possibility that a baby can be born with this condition is estimated to be 1 in 20,000 births.

Melanocytic nevus is caused by increasing the amount of pigment under the skin which affects the facial area causing the darker areas of the face than the general.

Various ways have been done by Mariana's parents to remove this birthmark. One of them by doing laser surgery. At five-years-old she underwent three laser surgery treatments to reduce the appearance of her nevus - as her mother feared she would be bullied.

Despite her mother's good intentions, Mariana says that she is happy because she does not have any surgery and she is happy to have different faces from other women.

 

Mariana, a stylist assistant, said: 'I feel more beautiful and totally different from other people because I have a nevus. I do not want to get rid of it. The laser surgery does not really help to reduce my birthmark and I'm grateful for that, because I'm understand, I'll never want people change my nevus. "

Now she hopes to inspire others to embrace their differences as well.

Mariana said: "When people do not know about me, they just stare and ask what it is, but some people who know me says that my birthmark , for them it's just another part of my body. I want others to feel confident like me about their birthmarks."
