News24xx.com -  The United State (US) President Donald Trump ordered to he US Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) to send Americans to the moon for the first time in decades, a move that he said could help the human to prepare for a future trip to Mars.

"This time we will not only stick our flag and leave our tracks," Trump said at the White House on Monday, December 11 2017 as he signed the new space policy directive.

"We will build our foundation for a mission to Mars and perhaps someday many worlds out there."

The United States astronauts last visited the moon during the Apollo mission of the 1960s and 1970s.

On July 20, 1969, The United States astronaut, Neil Armstrong became the first person that can walk on the moon.

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, who chaired the newly revitalized National Space Board, previously vowed to re-explore the moon, but gave little details.

Flanked by Pence and two female astronauts, Trump said the order will refocus the space program on exploration and discovery and marks an important step in sending American astronauts back to the moon for the first time since 1972.

The purpose of a new mission to the moon will include long-term exploration and use of its surface.

The White House stated that the United States will work with other countries and private industries to send astronauts back to the moon, develop technologies and equipment for human exploration to Mars and other destinations in our solar system.

Sending people to the Red Planet has been the goal of the United States for many years. The first manned Mars mission is planned for the 2030s, according to AFP news agency.
