Honorary pupil Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17, died on Tuesday in the hospital, less than three hours after the opening of the fire in the corridor of the Great Mills High School in Maryland.

He died after encountering a school security officer, Blaine Gaskin, who also worked as deputy sheriff and ran to the crime scene within a minute of the first shot.

After the incident, Gaskin was recognized as a hero for his decisive actions. Sheriff Cameron said: "When the shooting took place, our school security officer, who was at school, received disturbing information about the event and the shots. "He caught up with the shooter and grabbed him. He fired at the gunner; at the same time the shooter also shot. "
