News24xx.com -  When someone is suspected and diagnosed with cancer, the first question that comes to their mind is, “Why me?”.

Doctors in most cases don’t know what the causes of cancer, and it made many people assume what the caused cancer. And lso, because ours is a society that believes in karma, some people even think that they are being punished for something wrong they did.

There are some factors, traits and reasons that makes one more cancer prone than others as quoted from TOI on Friday, May 25 2018.

1. The cells
The cells on a human body will mature and die. And the process happens in our bodies for every second. But if the body’s damaged cells do not die, they form unnecessary clusters that later may become tumour and put one at a risk of cancer.

2. Gender
A compiled report by Cancer Research UK, Leeds Metropolitan University, Men’s Health Forum and National Cancer Intelligence Network says, that men are 40 per cent more likely to die from cancer as compared to women and 16 per cent more likely to get the disease.

3. If you taller
Researchers in Sweden found that the risk of men developing cancer of any kind rose by 11 per cent for every extra 10 centimeters of height, while in the case of women the risk rose by 18 per cent. Though height is not a big factor as obesity is, smoking and poor diet are.

4. The type of skin
Your skin type is one of the main factors that put you at the risk of skin cancer. If we go from light to dark, people with skin type one and two have the highest risk of developing cancer while skin type five and six are at the lowest risk. More pigmentation gives one more protection from the sun.

5. Age
Cancer is more common in old age. As people get older, their risk of getting cancer increases. The reason behind this is that the cells in our body get damaged, build up and form clots and tumours which may develop into cancer later (at old age). Once the damaged cells start growing and multiplying, they may cause cancer. People over the age of 70 are more at risk.

6. Genetic
If someone in your family has had cancer, then you must get yourself screened regularly and avoid behaviour that increases your chances of getting cancer. However, don't fret as much as genetics contribute only 5 per cent to the total annual cancer diagnoses.

If two or more close relatives from one side, either from the maternal or from the paternal side, have had cancer then it can be said that you have a strong cancer history. Thus, the chances of cancer genes being present in the family are higher.
