News24xx.com -  Scientists at the University of Stockholm in Sweden found that prolonged sleep over the weekend can compensate for its shortage on weekdays, prevent related illnesses, and reduce the risk of premature death. This is reported by the publication "Science Alert".

The study involved more than 38,000 adults who reported sleep duration during work and holidays. Specialists observed volunteers for 13 years, determining the death rate among those who slept less than five hours at night, and those who gave sleep six to seven hours a day (control group). At the same time, factors such as gender, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking were taken into account.

It turned out that in people under the age of 65 who had a lack of sleep, the risk of premature death increased by 65 percent. However, scientists noted that if these participants slept longer on weekends, their health did not differ from the control group. The equalization of mortality rates is also characteristic for volunteers over 65, because a shorter sleep is enough for them.

In addition, the researchers found that too long sleep (more than nine hours) was also associated with an increased risk of premature death.
