News24xx.com - The state of emergency in Turkey ended after being imposed for the past two years, following a failed coup attempt in 2016. But there were fears of opposition that a more repressive new rule would be enacted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government.

Erdogan declared a state of emergency in Turkey since July 20th, 2016, or five days after a series of warplanes bombed Ankara and bloodbaths took place in Istanbul. At least 249 people died in a coup attempt against Erdogan, which led to the failure.

An emergency that usually lasted only three months, Erdogan extended seven times. During an emergency, about 80,000 people were detained and more people were removed from various public offices.

Clean-up operations in modern Turkish history target not only prominent cleric supporters Fethullah Gulen who was accused of masterminding the coup attempt but also targeting Kurdish and left-wing activities. Gulen himself who settled in the United States (US) has denied himself involved in a coup attempt.

As reported by AFP on Wednesday, July 18th 2018, emergency situation in Turkey will officially end on Thursday, July 19th 2018 early morning. Erdogan's government no longer asks for an extension of emergency.

During a presidential election campaign last month, Erdogan promised to end the emergency if he wins. After Erdogan won the presidential election, Turkey experienced an important shift from the parliamentary system to the presidential system. Now, Erdogan is authorized to appoint ministers and vice presidents, also entitled to intervene in the legal system.
