News24xx.com - Romanian police clashed with tens of thousands of anti-government demonstrators throughout Romania. About 30,000 to 50,000 people, including expatriates, took to the streets down to conduct demonstrations, media reports said.

Some protesters in the capital Bucharest threw bottles, while police used tear gas, pepper spray and even water cannons. About 100 demonstrators and 10 policemen were injured, emergency services said.

A group of protesters tried to enter the government building in Bucharest, but were detained by police security forces. Others raised EU and Romania flags and shouted slogans. The protesters demanded the resignation of the government, objected efforts to weaken the judiciary by the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD), as well as low wages and deep-rooted corruption in the country.

This is the culmination of protests against PSD that have occurred for months. In July, President Klaus Iohannis approved the sacking of anti-corruption prosecutor, Laura Codruta Kovesi, who had led an investigation into local and national politicians involved in corruption. President Iohannis was under great pressure from PSD to approve his resignation.

About 150,000 gathered in Bucharest last year after the government issued a decision that could release those jailed on corruption charges. Many Romanian expatriates also joined in this action. Ileana Anghel traveled far from her home in Spain with her husband to take part. "We want to see modern streets and schools, and above all there is no need to pay bribes for everything" she told AFP.
