News24xx.com - A new map showing what under the ice in Antarctica looks like helps scientists predict the effects of global warming on frozen continents.

Glaciologists at the University of California, Irvine said that the map is the most appropriate map to reveal the layout of the land under the ice sheet.

They say the 'BedMachine' project has helped them identify which areas are more, or less, vulnerable to melting when the planet warms up.

They can also determine which glaciers have a layer of soil underneath, such as what is the location of that layer and what effect it has on the ice above it.

One of the most interesting discoveries is the discovery of the canyon under the Denman Glacier in East Antarctica. Scientists were surprised to learn that the canyon was deeper than they had expected.

The Denman canyon is known to have a depth of 11,482 feet (3,500 meters) below sea level. Thus, the canyon is set as the deepest point on land that is not covered by liquid water, the team said.

In addition to the Denman canyon, researchers also found the second lowest point on earth, which is under the ice sheet - Byrd Glacier in Antarctica which reaches a depth of 9,121 feet (2,780 meters) below sea level.

Previously, scientists set the Dead Sea coast in Israel as the lowest point in the world at a depth of 1,419 feet (432.65 meters) below sea level.
